What are personal injury claims?
Personal injury claims are a legal process for claiming compensation when you’ve suffered physical, mental or financial harm due to another person’s actions or negligence. A claim is intended to repay the impact of the pain and suffering, lost earnings, medical expenses and damage to your quality of life.
Some of the most common types of personal injury claims include:
- Road traffic accident claims
- Cycling accident claims
- Motorcycle accident claims
- E-scooter accident claims
- Slip, trip and fall claims
- Serious injury claims
- Whiplash claims
- Minor injury claims
- Accident at work claims
- Burn claims
- Brain injury claims
- Hearing loss claims
- Medical negligence claims

- Health and safety claims
- Industrial death claims
Those are just a few examples of personal injury claims. Whatever the circumstances of your accident, if someone else was to blame, you’re eligible to make a claim.

The time limit for making a personal injury claim in Northern Ireland is usually three years from the date of your accident. There are some exceptions. If you only became aware later that somebody was responsible for your injuries, you have three years from the date you found out.
If you were under 18 at the time, you can claim up to your 21st birthday. There are no time limits when the injured party doesn’t have the mental capacity to make a claim.
